Tawakkol Karman Honored in Berlin with Guardian of Democracy Award

Berlin – February 16, 2026 – Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman, president of Women Journalists Without Chains, was honored with the Guardian of Democracy Award during an official ceremony organized by the Global Forum in Berlin.

The award recognized her decades-long struggle to defend democratic values, promote freedom of expression, and safeguard human dignity across the Middle East and beyond.

In her acceptance speech, Karman said she received the award “with pride and gratitude,” stressing that it was not merely a personal tribute but a recognition of the sacrifices of all who believe in freedom and regard democracy as an inalienable right.

She dedicated the honor to “the brave men and women who resisted tyranny and paid the price of freedom with their lives, dreams, and years,” adding that the award deepens her commitment to continue confronting authoritarianism and defending the oppressed wherever their rights are violated.

Karman reaffirmed her vision of a world governed by law and respect for human dignity, rejecting “a world ruled by brute force and the law of the jungle.” She concluded with confidence that “peoples and freedom will ultimately prevail, despite the temporary dominance of repressive regimes. History has shown that the future belongs to those who believe in freedom and defend it.”
